Blueprint magazine invited Ash Sakula, inspired by Le Corbusier’s example, to build a minimal summer retreat in a location of our choice. Our Cabanon is not far from the famous Cabanon on a rocky Mediterannean peninsula in the grounds of the abandoned Hotel Karlina at Le Rayol-Canadel in the south of France.
The Cabanon has three parts: a cooking area with open sides and a canvas awning; a shower open to the sky and, round the corner, a WC; a living, eating, reading, working and sleeping area consisting entirely of a very large bed. Brass Turkish tea trays serve as tables. The ceiling over the bed is decorated with intricately patterned timber fretwork.
