Housing is what makes up the majority of mankind’s most complex and brilliant work of art, the city. And whereas historic housing forms -whether London’s Georgian houses, Berlin’s Miethauser, or Beijing’s hutongs- perfectly mirror the urbanism they are part of, contemporary examples for the most part do not rise to the occasion. Ash Sakula, in a series of ground-breaking projects, aim to challenge this status quo. Our work derives from the particularity, grain and character of its pre-existing situation, and combines a rediscovery of traditional housing arrangements with innovative thinking about transport, sustainability and lifestyle.
