Our submission in an international design competition for a new Museum to house the treasures of Tutankhamun, near the pyramids on the edge of Cairo. We placed the museum in a manmade hole, surrounded on all sides by the desert escarpment, with a narrow defile providing entry. The spoil from the excavation created a sand cone, giving extensive views of the Nile Valley and the pyramids. In this way, the security perimeter of the museum encompassed a large external court, enabling fatigued visitors to the largest museum in the world to take a break in the open air.
