South Wales is full of large old Miners’ Institutes of which this is a fine example, listed grade II. We showed how it could be brought back into use as a flexible and fully-accessible venue, equally able to host a Welsh choir evening with an audience of 500, or to quickly adapt to an intimate theatre for 150. We also examined how to improve the public realm outside the hall with proposals incorporating the adjacent public library.
