Phoenix

The Phoenix is a productive, sustainable, equitable and largely car-free neighbourhood of 700 homes on a former industrial site in Lewes, Sussex, a historic market town within the South Downs National Park. Human Nature, local developers, asked Ash Sakula Architects to design the first neighbourhood; one that is respectful of the town character, integrated with the flood wall, and the existing movement patterns of Lewesians. The neighbourhood's house forms, hosting homes of all sizes, jostle against one an other to form a distinctive collage. They are designed for construction in locally grown timber, a lime hemp mix and delicately tinted lime render with huge potential for vertical greening.
